Nationwide campaign to get people to drink tap water instead of bottled water

"Get rich by drinking your own water!"

Processes for Drinking Water & Sewage

  • What is the source of your drinking water?   Where does your water ORIGINATE?  (It is treated at a water treatment plant, but what watershed or aquifer is the sources of the water?)
The pumping station! It is gone through a cleaning process to take out the chemicals first. The next step is filteration making sure it is safe to drink.
  • What chemicals were found in your water that were higher than expected?
Sediments. The Ozone level is also very high, while helps in the killing of bacterias.
  • What chemicals did you NOT expect to find in your water?
I did not expect such a high Ozone level. I also did not expect Coagulations thats causes particles to stick to them, making the water unsafe.
  • Are there associated health risks with the chemicals found in your water?  (sources for this last question include the EPA, CDC, ATSDR and the National Library of Medicine's ToxNet program
Coagulations in water can cause hemophilia, liver diseases, and vitamin k deficiencies.

BLOG about your water quality
  • Where does your water come from? The source! Track it from the source to your tap
Our water comes from the Alameda County Water Supply.
  • What did you discover about your water quality?
I learned that the water is in-fact very clean and uses no additional flavor enhancements. The water taste of Fremont is a little bitter due to this reason,
  • Do you use a filter for your water?
No-Our water is straight from the tap.
  • What are you trying to filter out?
We do not own a special filter.
  • Do you drink bottled water?   How does this square with what you learned when you watched the Story of Bottled Water (see next exercise)?
My family is very big into not drinking any bottle waters due to the reason of bottles being a waste of plastic for the environment. We also save a lot of money by drinking tap water.

Blog about the public health importance of safe drinking-water

The Earth has 366 quintillion gallons of water. A number I never even knew existed. Out of this massive number, only .007 is drinkable that is shared amongst 7 billion people. The lakes around the world are shrinking, and the mountains are giving off less drinkable water year by year. 2 million residents lack water pipelines in Mexico due to ground water depletion. Out of 7 billion residents, 1.2 billion of them can't get access to fresh water. The US consumes more water than Europe and Africa, and more people around the world have a cell phone than fresh water. Clean water is sustains agriculture, industry, energy, and a healthy life. Ground water is water under our feet between rocks, dirt, and life. This water is trapped down here from rain absorption and stays stored down here for thousandths of years. Ground water can sometimes rise up to the surface of the land.Ground water is so important to us because it helps grow the farm plants that is delivered to us to eat because rain is not enough. Farmers depend on ground water in the dry seasons the most for their crops to live.

M4.6 Blog Assignment: Radon

An estimated 21,000 deaths just from cigarette smoking is extremely scary. These are 21,000 fathers, mothers, siblings, friends who have lost their lives due to not being fully educated on the side effects of smoking tobacco. I am a firm believer that the most important way one can stay clear of bad habits is by education. Education expands the users knowledge on what they should, and shouldn't be using once they find out about health concerns. I would start by creating a committee who all believes in the same goal as me; showing others the risks of smoking. I would then hold free educational class in local communities, parks, hospitals, and local weekend fairs. Some collaborators I would ask help from are elementary schools. This gives me a chance to start educating the youth and stray them clear of drugs even before they reach the legal age to smoke.

M4.2 Blog Assignment: National Library ToxNet

After watching this presentation, I was very surprised by how easily we can be exposed to harmful chemicals without even knowing. For example; baby formula sharing the same shelf with disinfecting wipes. This is causing harm to the formula which will eventually be consumed by the baby. This presentation showed us in depth the harmful effects of lead, nurses being sick on the floor, and many every day cleaning products.
One product in particular was bleach. Bleach is used in many products such as laundry, dishes, wipes we disinfect our homes and kitchens with. Bleach can be very harmful if consumed by one individual. One serious outcome of bleach exposure is chronic exposures that can travel throughout the entire body. This can result in ataxia, disorientation, constant headaches, short term memory, and loss of sleep. Liver damage and liver cancer can also be resulted from these exposures. It can then travel to your kidneys resulting in bladder damages, kidney failure, or even kidney cancer. Infants can be harmed by birth defects, fetal death, or very low birth weight, and even schizophrenia in adult life. Adult women can result in bladder cancer, myeloma, or even worsening of colored vision.
Another very serious health concern is from urea formaldehyde. This can be found in the buildings of our homes, works, stores, places we go to every single day making it hard to avoid. Some very serious health concerns it can cause is respiratory issues, cancer, or asthma in children. It can cause chest pains, shortness of breaths, and throat irritations. Once it gets in your system, it is very painful and almost impossible to get rid of on your own. It can be very serious and life threatening if not treated on time.

TESTS REVEAL HIGH CHEMICAL LEVELS IN KIDS' BODIES

At my first reaction, I was extremely shocked to see how harsh these chemicals are in a child's body. The video was very informative and should be viewed by everyone for their own knowledge.
Once I reviewed the hypothetical lab results, I was a little scared on what the potential dangers can be of each. Seeing how phthalates could cause so many complications such as infertility, testicular damage, and endocrine  complications is a very serious risk. These complications have the ability to almost ruin someone's entire life. It would be nice to see in this chart some ways how to prevent these chemical imbalances. Something that all of these chemicals have in common is harm to the liver.

As a patient, I would almost feel hopeless. Hopeless that there are so many complications targeting such different parts of the body. This can be requiring a patient on many medications and treatments for a long time. I would hope that now medical technology has an easier way of helping patients with chemical complications.

Personal Care Products

  • Were you surprised to find out the toxicity rating of your personal care products?
  • Did you decide to change any of your consumer behaviors based on your findings?
  • Should everyone know about this risks and why don’t they?
For my first finding I searched for a product part of my skin care routine every morning. This product is the: Tatcha Deep Brightening Serum.
I use this product because it is advertised to brighten skin texture, help with large pores, and smooths overall texture while moisturizing the skin. When I saw the toxicity, I was so surprised. Tatcha an expensive luxury brand product so I had expected better from it. It scaled as a 5 and I will stop using this product now. I feel that for the money I am paying, in return I should be receiving cleaner products. Everyone should know about the ingredients in this product so others can see what they are getting for their money.

For my second product, I searched up: Fenty Invisble Blotting Powder. This is a crucial part in my makeup application steps. This is the final step to my makeup routine that takes place at the very end. I use this product as a setting to the makeup all over my face. I was very very happy to see it scored as a 1. I use lots of Fenty products so I am happy that it is considered a clean product. I will still continue to use the brand! Personal Care ProductsPersonal Care Products

BLOG REPLY TO KEN COOK VIDEO.
This video was extremely eye opening. I pride myself in having a strong skin care routine first thing in the morning, as well as night. I would say I use a total of 10 products plus body lotions and perfumes throughout the day. After hearing that women who use 12 products on average have a chance of being exposed to 160 chemicals per day while men barely have half of that was very scary. It was terrifying to see things we do and are surrounded by everyday have such a high risk of impacting our health and we have no way of stopping it. My favorite part about this video was when Ken Cook was explaining to the audience about his own baby. This was so courageous of him to turn his situation into one to help and educate others.

For my first cleaning product I chose: Airwick Crystal Air-Air Freshener
This is a cleaning product I keep going all day just for a fresh smell. To me it seemed very harmless to the family since it is such a small product usually tucked away behind the couch. After researching more about it, I found it to be moderately harmful. I learned that inhaling too much of aresole products can cause harm internally even if it is only at a slow rate. I have no unplugged all air fresheners around the house and others should be aware of it, too.

My second product was: Lysol Brand II Disinfecting Wipes
I use these in our house for a quick wipe down for the kitchen counters. This is very helpful to me when I am in a hurry and need to clean in a short amount of time. Thankfully these only had a rating of 1 on the harmful scale. I am very happy to know this because this is a great product I will still continue to use!
