Why are we still ONLY focused on sedentary lifestyles and diets when addressing obesity in the US? Why are we not also looking at ways to decrease exposures to those chemicals that may be contributing to the epidemic
We are only still focused on diets when it comes to obesity. Obesity is a very complex and tricky health issue that most think is only the result of diet and a lack of exercising. Unfortunately, obesity can also be from a combination of genetics, medication uses, and social and economic status. Most personal behaviors going beyond eating habits such as sleep, sedentary and scree time, personal stress, have been associated with weight gain and maintenance in adulthood. When these behaviors are combined with diet, it is more likely to cumulative effects on an individuals life to help achieve and maintain a health body weight. Another factor that can contribute to weight gain is ones social status. Wealth tends to be correlated with obesity. Those who are below the poverty line are known to be obese. This is due to the fact that now organic foods are much more expensive than processed cheaper foods. Obesity is a complex disease that can be preventable. Many fail to look past dietary reasons for obesity because diet is something everyone can control and many feel the result of weight gain can be controlled.
