M8.3 Blog Pesticides

What did you find out about the pesticide residues that may be in or on your food? What do you think about this? What should we be doing about this in terms of public health, not just in terms of our personal choices?

Last night for dinner I ate 3 ounces of broccoli, and 2 ounces of shredded chicken.
Brocolli had 33 pesticide residues as follows:

Human Health Effects:

3Known or Probable Carcinogens4
16Suspected Hormone Disruptors
6Neurotoxins
6Developmental or Reproductive Toxins

Environmental Effects:

9Honeybee Toxins5

My chicken was much lower in pesticides with a score of only 7

Human Health Effects:

3Known or Probable Carcinogens4
4Suspected Hormone Disruptors
1Neurotoxins
2Developmental or Reproductive Toxins

Environmental Effects:

4Honeybee Toxins5
Seeing how dangerous broccoli is was very shocking. We have been accustomed to the idea that vegetables are supposed to be healthy and a key part to our food groups. You would assume that it is nothing but healthy. We should do a better job at advertising the difference between regular and organic vegetables to create awareness.

  1. Hi,

I was shocked just as you were. I am vegetarian so I eat so many veggies on a daily basis and I had no idea what is in the food that I eat. And I do think I am eating healthy with what I consume but with all the pesticides on them it can be so dangerous. But as a consumer I am clueless about this information so it is important that we do create more awareness.
