M9.4 Blog: Heavy Metals

Lead Poisoning is causing by a build up for lead in the body over a long period of time. Many get exposed to lead through dust in older buildings and poor air quality. Certain occupations can increase chances of getting lead poisoning, such as welding or construction. Lead poisoning can be fatal if the consumption is very high. Young children are very vulnerable to the risks od lead poisoning due to their weak immune systems. After reading the article about childhood lead poisoning in Nigeria, I was very concerned on how to make sure children in America stay safe from it. In 2010, a breakout of lead poisoning among children was discovered in Nigeria. The remote village had more than 400 deaths in children aged 5 years or greater. The village had to be
remediated to ensure no one else would get sick before MSF could provide medical treatments. The remediation aimed to provide exposure reduction, build local, state, and national capacity to respond to health crises, and ensure environmental remedies would be sustained with safer mining practices. During the 4 year intervention, 2,400 children received treatments.

  1. This was concerning to me as well. It is unfortunate that this remote village suffered from 400 deaths of children for them to be remediated. I think its is also unfortunate that those who are already disadvantaged seem to suffer from the accumulation of disadvantage more than others.
